Our Story: The Artisan Colour Journey
This is the story of Artisan Colour – a story that's still being written, one innovation at a time.
Founding Vision: The Genesis of Artisan Colour
In 1998, three print industry veterans – Doug Bondon, Joe Vallone, and John Passante – gathered at a local Scottsdale watering hole to lay the foundation for their shared vision.
Armed with more than 115 years of combined experience in printing and color separation, the trio envisioned a company where technical expertise intertwined with artisanal craftsmanship, innovation was championed, and an unwavering dedication to quality was paramount.
That vision was the genesis of Artisan Colour.
The Early Days: Building a Reputation of Excellence
On April 2, 1998, we opened our doors for business.
Our laser focus on color accuracy and print quality quickly earned us a reputation for excellence.
As our customer base grew, so too did our service offerings. In 2000, we built an on-site, full-service photography studio. This vertical integration allowed us to meticulously oversee every facet of image production, from the initial capture to the final print.
Within five years, Artisan Colour became one of the nation’s top print, catalog production, and color management companies, earning the trust of major brands like Neiman Marcus, Chico’s, and Patagonia.
However, this rapid growth presented new challenges.
Building for the Future: More Space, More Possibilities
Outgrowing not one, but two buildings in quick succession, we recognized the need for a larger facility to accommodate our customer’s evolving needs and support Artisan Colour’s continued growth.
In 2005, we built and moved into our third facility – which is also our current home today – a 36,000-square-foot building in North Scottsdale, Arizona.
With more space came more possibilities.
A Decade of Expansion and Innovation
The new building allowed us to broaden our service offerings and leverage our core strengths in color management, image quality, and printing to offer our customers a more holistic solution to their printing needs.
In 2009, we acquired Mighty Imaging, a leading large-format printing company.
This move allowed Artisan Colour to take on larger, more complex projects by expanding our services to include large-format printing, signage, and large-scale graphics.
In 2013, Artisan Colour expanded into small-format printing and direct mail marketing to offer highly effective, visually striking marketing collateral and direct mail campaigns for our customers.
In 2015, it was time to launch our web-to-print and online ordering platforms. We also expanded our infrastructure to become a full-service marketing fulfillment partner. With these advancements, Artisan Colour could now handle all of our customer’s print marketing logistics, including warehousing, storage, inventory management, kitting, assembly, and distribution for all of their print and promotional needs. This expansion not only addressed the needs of modern businesses This expansion into marketing fulfillment but also ensured that the high-quality materials we produced were handled with care and precision all the way to the end consumer.
Integrations and Innovations with Digital
In 2021, Artisan Colour was the first Arizona printer and the second printer in the nation to invest in the HP Indigo 7K digital press. The addition of this cutting-edge digital printing press opened up a world of new creative possibilities for our customers, including variable data printing, specialty inks, and custom packaging.
In 2021, we invested in DALIM ES, the gold-standard software for creating, producing, and managing print and digital content. This technology enabled us to streamline the design-to-production process and better meet our customers' increasing demand for image editing and color management support across print and digital channels.
After a decade of steady expansion and strategic investments in digital technologies, the time and opportunity came for us to add a team of digital artisans.
In 2024, Artisan Colour acquired MarComm, a digital marketing agency known for its sophisticated cross-channel strategies and advanced integration techniques.
"This acquisition brought together two industry leaders with distinct, complementary specialties under one roof, creating a unique synergy that sets us apart from other print-digital partnerships,” said Doug Bondon, CEO and Founder of Artisan Colour in the September 10th, 2024 press release.
Though our services and technologies have expanded over the past 26 years, our commitment to quality and craftsmanship remains unchanged—ever driven by the ethos that marked our humble beginning.
