Digital catalogs are designed for online viewing and often include interactive elements, like hyperlinks and videos. They’re easily accessible on various devices and can be updated frequently. Print catalogs, on the other hand, require high-resolution images and specific settings for bleed and margins to ensure quality printing.

What are the technical specifications for print catalogs?

Images for print catalogs should be at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) to ensure high quality. Lower resolutions can result in pixelated images. Regarding bleed and margin settings for print catalogs, the industry-standard bleed settings are 1/8" (0.125"). Safety margins are typically 1/8" but can vary depending on the project. Press-ready PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 are generally preferred for print catalogs; however, native files like INDD (InDesign) can also be used but should be packaged with all fonts and linked images. Be sure to convert text to outlines or embed fonts, and ensure all images are linked and included in the final file.
